Starting with defined zigzags, additional imagery moved me on to a more organic & patchy approach. The patchy chevron design was developed & sold. Result.

An exercise I used to do for C&G classroom courses was to give the same inspirational image to everyone for homework.  The following week we would view & discuss the resulting knit swatches.   From 15 students there would usually be maybe 8 or 10 with very similar stitch samples, because they hadn’t moved the idea on much so it was similar to the image.  The others were more varied in their interpretation, and the more of their own creativity went into the sampling the more original & unusual the samples became.  This was a valuable lesson in design – if you want to be original you need to put in the personal legwork to move things on, or to go for an unusual / more creative take on the inspiration.
